Ngando (Lenana to Railway Bridge)

at a glance

Ngando, once home to Kenya’s First president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. Grace Wahu Kenyatta (1897– April 2007), the first wife of Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya resided there until she rested. , It is off Ngong road between Dagoretti Corner and Karen. It was once a very affluent area. Though it has many mabati structures which are rented out as living quarters, the place has never been classified as a slum because the land they sit on has always had owners only that most of the land has been mired in multi generational property wrangles. The fast growing middle class in Nairobi has led to an increase in rent among areas closer to the CBD like Kilimani and Kileleshwa. This has led to a demand for cheaper housing in peripheral areas like Ngando. Ongoing Dualing of ngong road has led to increased accessibility which in turn is further fueling more demand for houses in this area.
